Geto Kogen: the tree-run zones

11 zones, 46.6 hectares, drawn by the resort itself — with 29 marked hazards and 62 numbered rescue points.

Off-piste skiing in Japan is forbidden by default, so a resort that permits it draws the ground where it is permitted and names every piece. Geto Kogen publishes that as a map in real coordinates rather than as a picture, which is why this page can show you the shapes instead of describing them.

North is up. Green is the permitted tree-run ground; thin grey is ordinary piste, for orientation; dashed lines are the lifts. Red is the resort's own hazards — three gullies and 24 points, one of which it calls Kamada Hole. The small dots are the numbered rescue markers.

The zones

English spellings appear where the Japanese name is an English word written in katakana — シューター is Shooter. Areas are measured from the resort's own outlines.

What the numbered dots are for

The 62 small dots are numbered signs on the ground, each named for the zone it stands in. They exist so somebody in trouble can say which one they are beside and have patrol know where that is: the resort calls the map a 位置確認ツール, a position-checking tool, and that is the reason these coordinates are public at all.

The rules, in the resort's own words

Quoted rather than summarised. 「着用を義務」 (compulsory) and 「着用を推奨」 (recommended) differ by one word, and only the operator's own page is current.

The resort's tree-run page — in Japanese, and the only place these are current.

Where this came from

The geometry is the resort's own published map, titled 夏油ツリーラン, projected about its own centre so that one unit of the drawing is one metre. Nothing is traced and nothing is inferred: every outline, hazard and marker sits where the operator put it. OpenStreetMap holds no gladed terrain here at all, which is why this resort does not appear on the site's other tree page.
